Design Brief
Our team had 2 main goals for this design:
(1) To create a chair that provided long-term comfort for students
who are studying or just taking some time off.
(2) Provide a spacious seating area that allows free movement,
allowing students to sit in multiple seating position
Concept
We followed an organic design process, beginning with the seat proportions and experience, the overall form ( a secluded area where a student can work without feeling completely isolated) and designing the frame to match.
Design Process
Prototype construction
We created two full-scale prototypes to demonstrate the ergonomics and aesthetics. We outsourced some of our production through Realform, everything else was done by us using Humber facilities.
Frame Design:
The contoured shape of the wooden frame matches the curved aesthetic of the chair, and makes use of a strong circular base that distributes the weight evenly through the splayed legs.
Wood choices
The chair's frame, in production, uses locally sourced maple plywood. It is cut using a 2-axis CNC and finished with an acrylic clear-coat.
Colorways and fabric choice:
We chose vibrant textile colors to match the design aesthetic of the Barrett CTI building, and we went with warm tones throughout our chair to invoke an inviting feeling when approaching the chair. Bright red was our selected color for the seat cushion and the backrest.
Bracket design:
We designed injection-molded spacer brackets to securely transition the chair legs into the seatback, as well as a base bracket to secure the frame at a right angle. The angles match the angled chair legs.
Fasteners:
The fasteners are all ¼-20 all use the same hex head for straightforward assembly. There are two lengths (2x 2” and 10x 1¼ “ )
Final Model
Our final model addresses the major concerns of students. Levana’s spacious design facilitates a wide range of male and female student percentiles. Its comfortable and slightly angled backrest enables students to sit and study for long study periods.
